The following agencies assist low income families apply for heating assistance along with other programs available to NJ residents. Click on the links below for more information.

Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program

LIHEAP is funded by the federal government. In order to be eligible for LIHEAP, your income cannot exceed 225% of the federal poverty level (approximately $48,000 for a family of four). For applications and additional information please contact the agencies below.

United Way/People Help provides emergency financial assistance for the benefit of Sussex County residents who are recommended by local agencies.

New Jersey Lifeline Telephone and Energy Bill Assistance Program.

Various utility bills are covered by Lifeline. The state and federal government supported program assists with paying home telephone, natural gas, cellular, and electric bills. Qualified families, including tenants that rent their home, will generally receive a credit or even a check from the state as part of Lifeline.

The State of New Jersey created the Universal Service Fund (USF) program to help make energy bills more affordable for low income customers. The goal of the USF program is to help ensure that income eligible New Jersey utility customers pay no more than 6% of their annual income for their natural gas and electric service combined.

You can apply for USF and LIHEAP at the same time by completing a single USF/LIHEAP application. However, if you complete this application during the time when LIHEAP is not accepting applications (typically April 1 through October 21), then you will only be screened for USF. You will then have to complete the application again during the following LIHEAP application period (typically November 1 through March 31) when you will be screened for both LIHEAP and USF benefits.
